On March 25, 1945, my daddy, MSgt. Claude M., was riding in the back of a troop truck on the way to Berlin. In his left breast pocket was the Bible given to him by the Gideons before he left the USA. A sniper hiding in a tree along the road fired on the truck and hit my daddy in the left side of his chest. The bullet went through the Bible, but was deflected enough that it missed his heart by 1/4 inch. He was operated on in the field hospital and finally transported home on the QEII. I was born in May of 1946. Daddy is now 89 years old. He has 3 daughters, 7 grandsons, 10 great-grandsons, and 4 great-granddaughters. Needless to say, Veteran’s Day is a very important holiday to us and we always tell the story of “Grandpa’s Bible.”
