Over Forty years ago the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the surface of the Moon. When their mission there was complete, they returned to Earth on July 24, 1969 in the Pacific Ocean. Waiting to recover them was the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVS-12) and President Richard Nixon.
Among the crew was my grandpa, Master Chief Petty Officer (MMCM) Dale S. As master at arms and one of the highest ranking enlisted men on board ship, he was assigned the role of personal escort to President Nixon during his stay. This was one of his last official duties as an active member of the United States Navy as he was set to be honorably discharged soon after this mission.
Footage and photographs exist of him with the President and I have found a short video clip of him on NASA’s website escorting the President to meet Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins in quarantine. You can view the video here
He is visible from approximately the 2 to 12 second mark, leading the procession in his dress white uniform.
There will be no film crews to visit my grandpa today, but he played an important role in the “Hornet Plus Three” mission. I am proud of his service to our country and contributing to Apollo 11’s success.
