License Information


First off, let's make this really clear--you must get a marriage license to be married (and for it to be legal) in the state of Tennessee. You do not need a license if you are simply renewing your vows. Without the license the service is strictly a religious ceremony with no bearing on your legal wedded status. With that said, some basic information on obtaining your license:

 

Tennessee Residents: If you or your spouse are legal residents of the state of Tennessee you will pay $98.50* for your marriage license.
*If you attend four hours of a premarital preparation course and present a certificate of completion your cost will be $38.50
Non-Tennessee Residents: If you are getting married in Tennessee and are both legal residents of another state (or country), then the price for the marriage license is $38.50.

 

  • Both participants must be 18 years of age or older. If under 18, please contact the courthouse at the number below for information.
  • You must both present a valid driver's license or certified birth certificate.
  • You must present a Social Security card if you do not have a driver's license or state-issued ID card.
  • If not a United States citizen, you must present a valid passport.
  • If either of you have been divorced or widowed, you will need to know the exact date that the divorce was final or the date of death. If the bride has had a name change in her divorce and has not had her name changed on her driver's license, she will need to provide a certified copy of her divorce decree. If you were previously married to each other, and your last names are still the same, you will need to provide a certified copy of the divorce decree.
  • There is no blood test.
  • There is no waiting period.
  • License must be used within 30 days of issuance; there is no waiting period, so license can be used the same day as applied for.
  • The courthouse cannot send out applications for marriage license, both Bride and Groom must be present, and payment must be made in cash. Exact change is appreciated.
