Tips for a Better Working Vacation

There are so many fabulous options in the Great Smoky Mountains. How do you stay motivated on a working vacation? We have some tips for you. Gathered from my personal experience and some articles from around the globe.

I have worked from home for years and when I worked in an office, I would take working vacations so that I could stay in places longer – Germany/Czech Republic, Maine, Kentucky with family. If you can do it, vacation working can be wonderful!

My tips:

  1. Create a comfortable space where you can see the view but have quiet to work.
  2. Get your coffee, or tea and a snack ready and set up near you so you don’t need to keep getting up.
  3. Tell your spouse, friend, family – whomever you are traveling with – that you will be working.
  4. Take breaks every hour – get up and walk outside; say hi to friend, family, spouse; stretch, do some yoga poses (I suggest a couple of sun salutations, a full body stretch, roll your shoulders up and down your back).
  5. Have an Internet back up. Unexpected power outages caused by weather or the electric company or Internet black outs can cause unnecessary stress. No one wants to tell his/her team leader she can’t work because while on vacation, she lost Internet. Make it happen no matter what. I like a Verizon Mi-Fi myself – other companies offer options. And do your research – where is the nearest coffee shop, library or public space with WiFi? Have a plan.
  6. Try not to brag about your vacation digs to your colleagues who might be stuck in windowless office somewhere. Share with your friends who might like the area, but keep the bragging out of meetings.

Other suggestions:

From halfhalftravel.com, the writer suggests this skeleton list of essentials in addition to standard ‘vacation stuff:’

Minimize distractions in order to work efficiently:

typing on a laptop

“I find that I check my phone often – okay, all the time. If my phone is next to me, I’ll start checking all my apps and it takes away significantly from my work. As with any type of task to which you dedicate your energy, take away the things that prevent you from being productive.”

“If you don’t work well in loud environments, get some noise-cancelling headphones . If you function well with background noise like I do, use the energy of those around you to keep yourself motivated. Remove the little distractions that get in your way of having a productive day in your remote office.”
