Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
Come to the Great Smoky Mountains for the beauty, the fun, the peace in a winter wonderland. Here are some photos and videos to inspire you.
Snow falls infrequently at low elevations in the Smokies, but at higher elevations, it can fall anytime from October through April. Read our blog on Smoky Mountain winter facts.
Winter Hiking
Winter hiking is filled with spectacular views. Read out tips for winter hiking in the Smokies here.
Before visiting the park in winter, please call (865) 436-1200 for road closure and weather information. Dial extension 631 for updates on temporary road closures and extension 630 for a weather forecast. Or follow road status updates on Twitter at https://twitter.com/smokiesroadsnps. Updates are available for Newfound Gap Road (US-441), Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road, and Cades Cove Loop Road.
Clingmans Dome Road
If Newfound Gap Road is not closed due to snowy or icy conditions, opportunities exist for cross country skiing and hiking in the snow along Clingmans Dome Road, which is closed to vehicles in winter. This road starts 0.1 mile south of Newfound Gap.
In addition, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) publishes temperature and precipitation data for several locations in the park. Visit the website to see if any snow has accumulated in the past 24 hours.
Ober Mountain
Ober Mountain is the place to go for skiing and snowboarding, tubing and even ice skating. Read all about Ober Mountain in our blog.
Ober Mountain Amusement Park and Ski Resort is a “mountaintop of fun, excitement and beauty.” Little and big kids alike AND all the adults can find entertainment at Ober – outside or warm and cozy inside.
Start your day at Ober Mountain by boarding the Aerial Tramway in downtown Gatlinburg and avoid the drive up the mountain while taking in, arguably, the best views as you soar above Gatlinburg for more than 2 miles. The cable car has been taking passengers from downtown Gatlinburg to the Ober amusement park and ski area since August 1973. Check out this video for a taste of what you’ll experience!
Once you reach the top, outdoor adventures at Ober Mountain include Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and the children’s play area – Cubbies Snow Zone – where younger children can just, well, play in the snow.
Passes and Rentals
Find lift pass rates here. Ober Mountain offers ski and clothing rental, along with lessons for young and old. Ober Mountain has 10 trails from beginner to advanced, including a freestyle Terrain Park. There are seven lifts to get you there. Check out the Slope report and the live webcams. One camera points at the activities going on. The other camera is the Mountain Valley view
Winefest continues through Feb. 15, 2022. This true winter celebration continues in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville. Millions of small, twinkling lights come together on streets throughout the mountain towns to form elaborate displays that will leave you in awe. Read all about the events of Winefest here.
